Symmetry

After I finish a piece of jewelry I proudly show it to my husband and he usually says “it’s very nice” which is code for he finds it a little weird. The only time he is very enthusiastic about my jewelry is when it has a great deal of symmetry. He’s a computer programmer so this is not surprising. Also, most people see machine made jewelry in stores that is very shiny and perfectly symmetrical. Everything is carefully measured and centered and polished. This traditional kind of jewelry is very impressive in technical skill. In modern jewelry art the boundaries of what is jewelry are explored and questioned. I really enjoy seeing something askew, mixing metals that don’t match, and deliberately creating a bit of chaos or tension. Symmetry is beautiful and Asymmetry is too!

Organized chaos is the natural state of my studio.
