As I look out the window I see the leaves are changing color, the days are shorter and it’s getting colder especially in the evenings. My birthday is in October and I am fortunate to enjoy the dual birthstones of Opal and Tourmaline.

To make these charms I melted down silver scrap I’ve collected into molten balls and then the hammering began. The renewal of materials to create art feels like an important message about transformation. I hope to inspire a sense of wonder about our potential to begin again and reconsider what is around us.

I’ve spent three decades as a mental health professional helping people develop insight. Recently I’ve been wondering about another meaning of insight; a deep understanding of a thing as it pertains to the art of making jewelry.

On the first day of summer I am releasing three new necklaces for my Essential collection perfect for gifting or your summer go to jewelry. I also share what I’ve been up to this month including the Visual Arts Center of NJ Members Show and co-designing a fordite necklace for my mother’s 85th birthday. Happy Summer!

On May 15th 2021 I launched this website and to celebrate two years, I created a mini collection.The Dream work necklaces explore the psychological concept of dream work. They remind me of the emergence of clarity from interpreting symbols in a dream. Dreams help us digest the events and feelings of daily life making Dream work an important element in emotional well being.

On April 19th Lori Aks Jewelry celebrates two years in business! It is a joy to think about all the art jewelry that has flown from my bench into people lives and I thank each customer for taking a chance on me. It is a nice feeling to grow a following and I am especially grateful for repeat customers. I plan to keep making interesting jewelry that will tempt you to say why not treat myself.

For Valentine’s Day this year I share my thoughts about the meanings of flowers and gemstones as a way to communicate love. Fordite is a non-traditional gemstone that I like for Valentines Day because it reminds me of handmade Valentine’s Day cards.

Happy New Year! Although it is barely mid January, it feels like the month is racing by. I started the month with a deep clean of the jewelry studio which was long overdue. Reorganizing my gemstones took the most amount of time, but I am sure this will help me in the coming year as I create new jewelry. I also repaired some of my tools and collected all of my silver scraps so I can reuse them. Thanks to my neighbor’s tree project I was able to add a fabulous tree stump to the studio that will come in handy as a hammering station.

I am sitting down to write in the midst of a busy month of jewelry shows, studio time and psychology practice. I am excited to take some time off this week to host my family for the holiday.
